XBL Arcade Review: Undertow
game: Undertow
review | 12/05/07 | Chris Martin
Undertow is what Xbox Live Arcade needs more of: a simple premise with perfect execution and excellent multiplayer through Live. Play with up to 16 players through Live or split-screen locally or System Link. Or just add bots. Capture the spawn-points to reduce the enemy\'s \"tickets\" or lives to zero. An absolutely simple, stunning game with deep combat and strategy, Undertow is a testament to the greatness developers can achieve in such a small package.

BioShock Review
game: BioShock
review | 08/31/07 | Chris Martin
From the article: \"BioShock is the latest effort from Irrational Studios (now 2K Boston and 2K Australia) and it\'s a massive undertaking, many years in the making. And it\'s so good, we might not see a game of it\'s caliber many years after. BioShock is a shooter, a retro sci-fi thriller, a revenge story, a dystopian allegory, an adventure, and to a lesser extent a role-playing game. But BioShock is first and foremost a first-person-shooter. It leaves no question in the player\'s mind, and doesn\'t dance around it\'s pedigree in the way Deus Ex did, or the way System Shock 2 was sparse on the shooter side, heavy on the RPG. No. BioShock is a game where you definitely have to kill things. And kill things aplenty.\"

A 'Rapturous' Hands-On
game: BioShock
preview | 08/15/07 | Chris Martin
We travel fathoms under the ocean to Rapture, a city built on the most basic of ideals: \"a man is entitled to the sweat from his brow.\" A dystopia, like all dystopias, are built to fail. We are not surprised then, when Rapture, brainchild of Andrew Ryan, takes on water (by the deciliters), and you\'re trapped right in the middle of it. Full impressions and expectations inside.

Bioshock Demo On Xbox Live
game: Bioshock
news | 08/13/07 | Chris Martin
This came out of nowhere. The studio formerly known as Irrational (they changed their two divisions\' names to 2K Australia and 2K Boston) get a big pat on the back for sneaking their demo onto Xbox Live on Sunday. Bioshock, which puts you through the eyes of a crash victim who gets stuck in the underwater dystopia known only as Rapture, just went gold last week. Now, we\'ll get to sample what we\'re betting is going to be a ground-braking experience.

Halo 3 to feature 4 Player Co-Op, 2 New Characters to Join Previous Heroes
game: Halo 3
news | 08/01/07 | Chris Martin
I intentionally avoided, up until now, posting news about Halo 3 - pics notwithstanding - because, frankly, I don\'t care to learn about the levels or the neat gizmos the good Master Chief will be using this time around, ahead of time. They, to me, are spoilers. I am at the point where I just want to play the game for myself and be surprised. I am breaking my rule now because the latest news about Halo 3 steps beyond that broad line of \"developer hype.\" Today Bungie officially confirmed that Halo 3 will feature 4 player Co-op play over Xbox Live and System Link. It\'s that kind of important news that just needs to be boldface.

Stuntman: Ignition Preview
game: Stuntman: Ignition
preview | 07/23/07 | Chris Martin
One of the under-the-radar games this year, THQ\'s Stuntman: Ignition, has us all excited. Whether it\'s the parody of big-budget action films, the balance of risk and reward, or the allure of string-combos, this game seems to have quite a lot to offer gamers. We took the stuntman\'s job for several hours in the Xbox Live demo of Stuntman: Ignition. We ran through burning buildings, shot down helicopters, and braved a hand-brake-less-reverse-one-eighty, and have big, big smiles to show for it. More inside!

Lunar Knights Review
game: Lunar Knights
review | 05/10/07 | Amanda Bateman
In Lunar Knights, you take control of two different heroes, Lucian and Aaron, one powered by the sun, one powered by the moon, in an attempt to free the world from the vampiric legion. If you are familiar with the Vampire Hunter (Baktai GBA) series, you\'re already familiar with Lunar Knights. It is, however, Kojima Productions\' first foray on the Nintendo DS, and it\'s one worth a look.

1Up.com and Sony Both Wrong: Neither Sixaxis nor Wiimote Win Emmy Award
news | 01/10/07 | Aaron Stanton
Inaccurate stories are often hard to kill after they\'ve seen some publicity. When Sony sent out a press release on January 8th claiming that the Sixaxis controller had won an Emmy for technical innovation, many people were understandably upset. Why had the Sixaxis won and not the Nintendo Wii? Then, 1UP.com reported that the Wiimote had also won an Emmy. In truth, neither won. Both Sony and Nintendo did win awards, but both won for past contributions, not for the Wii or the PS3. Nintendo won for the D-Pad. Sony won for the Dual Shock.

The Current Standard: Spin on Video Game Blogs
editorial | 01/05/07 | Chris Martin
Recently, in an interview with Ars Technica, Scott Henson, product unit manager for Microsoft\'s game technology group, made a statement regarding HD-DVD and Sony\'s defunct Betamax. Unfortunately for those of us who read only headlines and move on, the whole story is not being told. And now it\'s being spun by blogs with a hankering for a little more web traffic into a false statement. In this editorial, Chris Martin discusses the spin that blogs like to put on quotes and tries to understand just why blogs have no responsibility to report truth.

Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 2 Review
game: Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 2
review | 12/22/06 | Amanda Bateman
\'I am stronger than you are!\' \'No, I am strogner than you are!\' And then the two guys start screaming and powering up, and there\'s a lot of fighting. Yes folks, that\'s my summary of the craziness that is Dragon Ball Z. But despite that, it makes a pretty fun fighting game! And once you\'ll read this, maybe you\'ll understand why.

Microsoft Shuts Down Halogen, Kills 3 Year Halo RTS Project
news | 09/11/06 | Aaron Stanton
In a sad, but not unexpected move, Microsoft has finally killed the Halogen Halo RTS project. Halogen, a fan created real-time strategy game based on the Halo intellectual property, has been under development for nearly three years. Now, due to a request from Microsoft the cease development, the project has stopped, and its creators promise that the project website will be pulled within the week. From the tone of the farewell letter posted on Halogen\'s site, you can tell that this is a long-expected development, but a sad one nonetheless.

20th Century Fox has announced that they\'ll be releasing a number of Blu-ray movies just before the PS3 launch in November, including at least one dual-layer Blu-ray that clocks in at 50 gigabytes. According to their press release, Fox will be selling Behind Enemy Lines, Fantastic Four, Kingdom of Heaven (Director\'s Cut), Kiss of the Dragon, The Omen, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Speed, and The Transporter for $40 each.
